The main gates to the city are inscribed with
" the Most splendid Julia Colony" a
reminder of Sesar Augusto's fondness for this
charming roman settlement.
The
current city of Spello (14th and 15th century)
resting on it's former Roman ruins offering Spello
a richness and beauty. The streets are full of
little squares and romantic gardens enclosed within
the ancient walls and medieval quarters.
Spello is host to famous works by Pinturicchio
("Annunciation", "Nativity","
Dispute of Jesus with the Doctors", "Madonna
with Child").
Spello
offers both the treasures enclosed within its
walls, and, moreover, it makes a great base for
exploring Umbria being set in a strategic
position between Foligno and Assisi. In the ancient
Hispellum, we can plunge into the nature, in a
quite place, where traditions are respected with
love,and where simple things can still be enjoyed
like the traditional products of ancient Umbrian
kitchens as well as the good local wine.
A milestone in Spello’s
tradition is the Infiorata, a feast which involves
all the community in producing artistic masterpieces
with dried local flowers arranged on pavements
and roads all around the town.
