DESCRIPTION

 

Day 1 - Arrive in Umbria. The tour will start at the airport where you are flying to or at the pick-up point you decide. You will be met by a member of JustUmbria team and driven to the beautiful accommodation we have reserved in Gubbio. A welcome aperitif and dinner will be held for you and your fellow travellers. The first and the last day of the tour will be tailored according to your flight schedules.

Day 2 - Gubbio & Truffle Hunting. The day will start with a visit to Gubbio, one of the most ancient towns in Umbria. remaining marvellously well-preserved over the centuries. A guided tour (optional) will lead us through the many monuments that bare witness to its glorious past. Architecturally it represents the zenith of medieval civilization of society of the 13th and 14th centuries. For the late afternoon: truffle hunting experience! We will meet with the truffle hunter, which will bring us into the woods to seek out the precious Umbrian “tartufo” lead by his dog. We will then enjoy the truffles at dinner, with fresh pasta and other local delicacies.

Day 3 - Monte Cucco Park. This amazing unspoiled park, rich in natural beauty and history, is the perfect place for a day immersed in nature. We will drive to Costacciaro, the headquarters of the park, where you will delight in impressive fortifications of the ancient castle. You can choose amongst the numerous activities available or just enjoy a truly unique hiking experience. We highly recommend the excursion of Monte Cucco Caves, one of the largest karst formations in Italy, comprising thirty kilometres of galleries where strange rock formations have been shaped by underground streams. We will be back in Gubbio before dinner which will be at leisure.

Day 4 - Trasimeno Lake. Today we will leave Gubbio and make our way towards the Trasimeno Lake. Following a panoramic back-road and stopping for a short walk and an espresso in the beautiful village of Montone. Afterwards, we will visit the town of Magione. A guided tour will show us the amazing “Castle of Knights of Malta” and also the old church of “Madonna delle Grazie”. From the nearby village of Montecolognola, we will enjoy a magnificent view of the Trasimeno Lake. We will then move towards Castiglione del Lago. This beautiful town, once an island in Lake Trasimeno was built on top of the existing limestone. Originally a small Etruscan centre, founded at the beginning of the 6th century B.C. You will have time to explore around, or simply relaxing walking by the lake. For those who are passionate about bird-watching this is a paradise! We will also make sure that you try the “fagiolina”, the precious local legume also Slow Food certified!

Day 5 - A day among the islands. The tour will start from San Feliciano, a nice small village on the lake banks, where a ferry will bring us to Polvese island where we will spend the morning throughout its numerous attractions. After a few hours we will be back on the mainland and we will carry on towards Passignano, a small district on the lake banks, where we'll have lunch. Another ferry will then bring us to the Major Island, the only to be inhabited. This island was beloved by Saint Francis who in 1211 went there for Lent. You will find yourself immersed in a splendid residential area, that has preserved the appearance of a fishing village, with houses dating back to the 14th or 15th century. We will be back to Castiglione del Lago before dinner.

Day 6 - Panicale, Paciano and Città della Pieve. Today we will momentarily leave the lake behind and head inland. We will spend the morning visiting two ancient villages: Paciano and Panicale. Paciano is medieval village, with Etruscan and Roman origins and famous for Palazzo Baldeschi and the Churches of San Giuseppe and Madonna della Stella. Panicale, just a few kilometres away is a perfectly preserved medieval village. For those who love art, here you can admire fresco’s of Perugino, the Umbrian renaissance artist. We will then immerse ourselves in nature for a lunch in a beautiful local winery, where the tasting will be combined with local delicacies for a light lunch. The afternoon will be spent in Città della Pieve, where you will be fascinated by the artistic vocation, testified by its Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassic buildings. Including, the masterpieces of one of the most relevant Italian renaissance painters; Pietro Perugino. Don’t get trapped in the “baciadonne” alley, the narrowest street in Italy with its 20 inches width! We will be back to Castiglione del Lago for the last dinner in Umbria.

Day 7 - Farewell. Today will be the farewell day. We will drive you to the airport (or any drop-off point you will indicate). The first and the last day of the tour will be tailored according to your flight schedules.
